Baseball Completes The Weekend Sweep Over Utica 10-3 and 6-0

Matt Samela registered four hits, three RBIs and two runs scored

Utica, N.Y. -- The baseball team swept Utica Sunday in a doubleheader, 10-3 and 6-0. The Bombers (16-8) lead the Empire 8 with a 7-1 conference record and Utica (4-11) is last with an Empire 8 record of 0-6.

Junior outfielder Matt Samela (Staples/Westport, Conn.) paced the Bombers by going a combined 4-for-9 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Senior first baseman Jason Friedman (Whitney Young/ Chicago, Ill.) went 3-for-8 with three RBIs and one run and senior outfielder Eric Maya (Rome Free Academy/Rome) went 2-for-4 with one RBI.

In game one the Bombers scored two runs in each of the first four innings. In the second, senior designated hitter Jeremy Peter (Thomas R. Proctor/Utica) singled to score freshman third baseman Dylan Perez (ConVal Regional [Conn.]/Peterborough, N.H.) and junior second baseman Todd Czerno (Columbia/Brainard). Czerno doubled in the fifth to score Friedman, who had also reached base on a double. Friedman went 2-for-4 and in the third drove in two runs.

Sophomore Adam Brown (Greece Athena/Rochester) pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs and striking out six batters. Senior Ryan Mays (Clinton/Clinton) finished the game by allowing one hit and striking out two.

In game two the pitching duo of Peters and sophomore Pete MacDaniel (Schuylerville/Gansevoort) held the Pioneers to only four hits. Peters, who picked up his first win, pitched six innings and struck out four. MacDaniel took over in the seventh and whiffed two batters.

Eric Maya hit three doubles and one triple over the last four games
The Bomber offense provided the support by scoring runs in all but two innings (the first and third). Samela and junior outfielder Eric Ferguson (Columbia/East Greenbush) each went 2-for-4. In the fifth Samela registered his third double of the season and second of the day. He drove in sophomore second baseman Kurt Bednarcyk (Fairport/Fairport). Ferguson also added a double in the fifth.

In the sixth, Maya, who was 1-for-3, hit his third-career triple and scored when Perez hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield. 

The Bombers, who are in pursuit of their eight-straight Empire 8 Title, travel to Rochester Wednesday for a 4 p.m. non-conference game.
